Letter to the Editor

Glad for artistic support

I am writing to express my gratitude for David Minton's review of the recent Minds Wide Open Art Center's show at the Carnegie Center.

The work was stunningly powerful. I was astonished that people could create such sophisticated art from simple markers and ballpoint pens. Although all of the work was amazing, I was particularly drawn to Linda Little's flowers, baskets and provocatively witty cat, to Myrna Hamkin's landscapes that accomplish the seemingly impossible task of merging the trite with the mysterious, and to Beverly Baker's complex and layered line art.

I found myself wondering what these talented people might accomplish if they had access to the materials that many of us who produce art take for granted. It was a humbling experience.

I hope this letter will encourage the Herald-Leader to continue to review non-mainstream shows and to encourage the agencies that these artists rely upon for living and educational situations to increase their support for these talented people.
