White Boys!
Braunstein/Quay Gallery is pleased to present new paintings, drawings, and sculpture by nationally recognized outsider artist, Bruce Burris, in an exhibition entitled White Boys!

Bruce Burris is a staunch social activist and storyteller. Wherever he lives he becomes aware of the political and cultural aspects of the community. Burris' unconventional, colorful, graphic, image and text-filled works address stories that are not often discussed or questioned by today's society. His seven years in Kentucky are documented in this exhibit.

For Burris, the South is a magnifying glass for society's downfalls. White Boys! satirically examines Southern culture and the power of white men in political and religious roles as well as various other stereotypes and notions of cultural identity. Issues such as the perpetuation of the 'church of ignorance is bliss' by preachers and politicians alike, as well as the fascination with violent crime and how criminals become "stars", are layered in his unique and complex blend of storytelling and colorful cacophony. These works contain crude phrases and stereotypical images illustrating themes found in local newspapers and celebrated in back road folk signage. The result is often shocking and, at times, humorous yet makes one question the impetus of such work as well as the modems facilitating the continuation of these cultural norms.
